There are many caveats here that make your upgrade attempt error out. Also, there might be hardware block — especially on systems built before 2015. Microsoft included system compatibility blocks with Windows 10 1903. So, keep in mind your firmware or BIOS and all hardware drivers are up-to-date before trying to upgrade.

Editor Note 1/15/2020: This guide was written in 2017. It becomes updated to reflect the last of support for Windows 7. You can read the real text given below:
Windows 10 was first launched to the market with an offer of a 1-year free upgrade. From July 29th, 2015 to July 29th, 2016, users can upgrade-eligible Windows 7 or 8 devices to Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system for free. Lots of users did take benefit of it, but for one reason or another, lots of others avoid the offer. No surprise, after one day when Microsoft’s free offer ended, procrastinating users appear all over the network.
Last August, I checked that the free upgrade offer looks to be available and I wrote a short article about it. In the month of August, some users were still getting alerts to upgrade for free. However, others saw them disappear simultaneously. 11 months have passed when the free upgrade ended; in fact, the 2nd anniversary of the Windows 10 upgrade is coming.

How To Get a Free Upgrade to Windows 10
According to some members on MS Community forums, Microsoft trying to forgive those who ignored the upgrade. It looks you can get the other chance to upgrade to Windows 10 by just contacting support. A Microsoft MVP reacted to a member inquiring about getting Windows 10 for free and this is what he said:
Contact Microsoft support to request a free upgrade from Windows 7 to10. The team agent provides you with an exception link to enable the free upgrade to Windows 10.
Besides that, you might also eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade after using Assistive Technologies. Well, the users of Assistive Technologies can be broadly defined as users with a specific disability or impairment using third party hardware or software. There is no verification process for those who qualify for the Assistive Technologies upgrade. Also, we mentioned this in a blog last year; the opportunity remains open and everyone can use it to still rip a free copy. Of course, we want you not to skip this offer from MS and to only exercise this choice if you depend on Assistive Technologies.
If you are not interested in any support loopholes or obstacles, I discovered that you can upgrade without buying a license at all. You might be wondering.
Microsoft said the free offer ended in July of 2016. It looks that it was more of a marketing or formality mumbo jumbo to create a sense of clamor.
I tried to test this out by first backing my HP Elitebooks factory Windows 7 picture. Also, I tried my HP desktop with Windows 8.0. During this whole process, the first thing I discovered is your Windows 7 or 8/8.1 license must be enabled. If it’s not, Windows 10 trying to prompt you for a product key.
You can’t use a Windows 7 or 8 key while upgrading. What you can do though is turn on it using a Windows 7 or 8 key after setup is finished. If you select to perform a clean install. If it’s enabled, then setup doesn’t prompt you. That’s all about it, you can then upgrade without any further obstacle. There you go, my PC upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 in 2017 for totally free.
Editor’s Note: I’ve done this many times using my Windows 8 Pro license key that came with the DVD. I take MS up on its offer to upgrade free of cost when it was available. But I always try to do a clean Windows install. It makes sense that I tried to use the real license key.
What happens if my PC is not activated?
If your Windows 7 or 8 license is not enabled and you are not interested in buying a license, then your choices are limited. You have some options though. MS offers a trial of 90 days to its Windows 10 Enterprise edition. Windows 10 Enterprise is distributed under Microsoft’s volume license program for big enterprises that use Windows 10 in bulk. It’s a complete edition of the OS but in this situation, it’s an evaluation variant of the software. Users try to register before they can install or download the software. This option is best for those who are executing Windows Vista or don’t have a genuine license, to start with.
One method that users can use to extend Windows 10 trial usage is to join the Windows Insider Preview Program. Be advised, whenever you sign up for Windows 10 Insider Previews. You are choosing to download and use pre-launch software still under heavy development. The risk factor is high as evidenced by a recent inadvertent delivery of internal rough edge builds. Aslo, it is not intended for those who are interested in bleeding edge.
Users also have the recovery options like return back within 10 days of upgrading – that is if you can boot the PC. Regular backups like creating system images or backing files on OneDrive should make it protective enough to use Windows 10 Insider builds after getting a free copy of the software. But, also you can use it at your own risk.
For those who already install it, activated copy of Windows 10, but want another copy setup maybe for compatibility purposes on a 2nd partition or drive. Also, there is a loophole available. I discovered that if you already activated or installed Windows 10 with a Digital License, you can do exactly that. Simply install a 2nd copy and it will enable without asking any questions. Previously, extra installations on the same hardware needed the purchase of an extra license to activate it.
The free upgrade situation is a bit irritated, and I mean that the similar way Alanis Morisette meant it: not actually irritated, but rather unfortunate for some users. Microsoft gives a deadline and I am sure lots of users with eligible Windows 7 and 8 licenses ended up purchasing a full Windows 10 license.
