COM Surrogate

Most of the time, multiple COM Surrogate processes are running at once. In case, if you have to go to the task manager. Then you will normally see two of them running.

In case, if you have to right-click on either and then choose Go to Details. Now, you will also see that the process name is actually dllhost.exe. So, you will also notice that the process runs under your username. This is not available in the System or Local Service or Network Service accounts.

Essentially, Microsoft also creates an interface for the developers. You have to create extensions to programs called COM Objects. Also, it is used for certain programs in Windows 10. A Windows Explorer also has a COM object that will also allow you to create thumbnails for images and videos in a folder.

Though, this is also a big problem with these COM objects. Also, this was a crash and bring the Explorer process down with it too. It means that your whole system would crash if a COM object failed for any reason.

You have to fix this issue, a Microsoft also came up with the COM Surrogate process. So, that this will basically run the COM object in a separate process than the one that requested it. Now, the COM object would also not run in the explorer.exe process. So, this is a newly created COM surrogate process.

In case, if the COM object crashed. Then this would only take out the COM Surrogate process and Explorer would continue running. Also, if you download Process Explorer, then you can see the COM object I am referring to above. Then If you hover your mouse over the dllhost.exe entry. So, you can also see the COM class is Microsoft Thumbnail Cache. Then the extension also uses to create the thumbnails in Explorer.

Is It A Virus?

So, There have been instances in the past where trojans and viruses have been hidden in the Windows operating system. You have to mask themselves as a COM Surrogate and then other Windows processes.

In case, if you open task manager. Then right-click on the process and then choose the Open file location. So, you will be able to find the source location for the process. Also, if a COM Surrogate process will also lead to a file called ‘dllhost’ in the C:\Windows\System32 folder that is unlikely to be a virus. In this case, if it leads elsewhere, then you should run a virus scan immediately.

COM Surrogate

Normally, a COM surrogate also uses very little memory and CPU. Then there are only one or two instances of it running. In case, if there are numerous dllhosts.exe processes or the process. This is by eating up more than 1 to 2 percent of your CPU. Now, I would also suggest performing an offline virus scan. It is better to detect tricky hidden viruses.
