Facetime Waiting for Activation – Fix Error

There are many useful features on your iPhone that you guys might enjoy regularly or even on a daily basis when you figure out how you can use them. Facetime. For instance, is something that has gotten a lot of positive feedback from Apple customers when it was first introduced. In order to use Facetime, though, you guys must first set it up, and after you do that, it’s also possible that it might not work as it is supposed to. We are going to discuss Facetime Waiting for Activation – Fix Error.

Maybe you guys are getting a message on your iPhone that says “Facetime Waiting for Activation”. Let’s now talk about what that message means. And also how you can get rid of it so you guys can start enjoying this excellent feature on your device too.

Facetime Waiting for Activation – Fix Error

The Facetime activation error can also occur for many reasons actually. Most of the time, it also shows up with different wording like ‘Activation unsuccessful‘, or ‘An error occurred during activation. try again’. Well, all of these are basically pointing to the same problem and there are some simple things that you can do to try to resolve it as well.

Before you guys attempt to fix it though, please be patient and also wait at least 24 hours. Apple says that activation can most of the time take this long so trying again after a day might solve your problem. If it has been up to 24 hours and you still face the same error, here are some of the solutions that you can try:

Check System Status Page of Apple

Before you try to fix the problem, it’s a good idea to check out Apple’s System Status site actually. It will basically show you if FaceTime is facing any server issues at the moment that could be causing the error or not actually. This is indicated through FaceTime being shown in yellow on the site as well. But, if the app is listed in green, then there are no current server issues so that you should proceed to the next solutions below actually.

Enable and Disable Airplane Mode

Well, maybe that activation issue is just a dumb hiccup in the system. Now before going any further in the troubleshooting of your problem. You should try to turn the Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, and then turn it off.

Ensure You are Connected to WiFi and Cellular Data

This one sounds obvious, however, it is worth rechecking that your WiFi and cell data are working. If you are not connected to the internet, then you might see the FaceTime Waiting for Activation error. Because the app won’t be able to reach Apple’s servers actually.

Toggle FaceTime OFF and ON

This is actually a possible solution that was offered to me by Apple when I called them about my issue. In my case, it did not help at all, however, you probably want to try that and see how it goes for you as well. Apparently, this is a trick that basically helps many people.

Most of the time just turning off FaceTime and then turning it back actually solves the problem. I am not sure what makes it work, however, it is worth giving a try as well.

Then to Settings → FaceTime → Toggle OFF and then after a minute or two. You have to turn it back ON. See if you can get it to work this time or not. If not, then keep on reading.

Make sure your cell plan lets you receive the SMS

This is not obvious at all, however, if you guys are trying to activate FaceTime and iMessage on an iPhone, then Apple might try to send you an SMS as part of the activation process as well. This SMS is typically invisible to the user as all happens in the background, but this is basically the equivalent of Apple sending an SMS to the phone in order to verify its status. If you guys can’t receive SMS messages, which I admit would be really unusual, then Apple might not be able to authorize the device in order to activate FaceTime and iMessage. In this case, double-check along with your carrier that you guys can indeed receive the text messages.

Ensure You Have the Latest iOS Version

Well, as always in these kinds of situations, it might be a really good idea to update to the latest version of iOS if you guys are having some issues. Especially if you are still sporting a version of the operating system that is a year or more out of date as well. In order to update to the latest iOS version, you have to go to Settings → General → Software Update.

Check Date and Time Settings

Make sure you guys have set the correct date, time, and also time zone on your iPhone. Head to Settings → General → Date and Time and also check the details. Toggle ON the Set Automatically option as well.

Put your SIM card in a different phone, and then reset that phone

I have not really seen this solution anywhere on the internet, however. This is the only thing that worked for me whenever my greyed out phone number would not activate iMessage actually. All I did was just pop out the SIM card and put it in a spare iPhone I had on hand as well. The same issue happened on that phone, however, after going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings, everything worked really fine. I then put the SIM card back in my main iPhone and iMessage activated almost quickly.

Well, in retrospect, resetting my main phone, to begin with, could have done the trick. However, I would have had to set up the whole phone all over again. That would have been a huge waste of time actually.

Wait 24 hours

Apple also suggested that it might take more than 24 hours to activate iMessage and FaceTime. Because you don’t have anything better to do, maybe you just sit back, relax. And then wait a day or so to see if things magically start working again as well.

Check for Restrictions Settings

Head to the Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → and then turn off Content & Privacy Restrictions.

If that’s not possible because of certain other reasons, make sure FaceTime is turned ON in the list of ‘Allowed Apps’ actually.

Reset Network Settings of iPhone

As we discussed above, Apple does a bit of SMS trickery in order to activate FaceTime and iMessage on your device. So if you guys are having either Wi-Fi or cellular network issue. Then Apple won’t be able to activate your device over these two services. In order to rule out issues related to your connectivity, then head to Settings > General > Reset Network Settings. When the reset performed, you will have to enter your Wi-Fi password again. However, at least you will be operating on a clean slate, as far as networking goes actually.

Restart Your iPhone

Well, if none of the above options have worked for you, then one last thing you can try is to go to Settings  General  Shutdown. When your phone switches off, you have to wait a minute and then power it back on. Hopefully, this should help you to fix the FaceTime activation error issue.

If in case this too does not do the trick, then the best option would be to contact Apple Support as well. They’ll be the right source in order to help you out.
