Flash TWRP Recovery Through FastBoot on Wear OS

Although small in size, the Wear OS watches feature a full Android OS of their own. And it has bootloader and recovery modes as well just like your Android phones and also tablets do. We are going to discuss Flash TWRP Recovery Through FastBoot on Wear OS

Wear OS watches come along with an unlockable bootloader and you guys can even install TWRP recovery on a Wear watch. However, finding a TWRP recovery image for your Wear watch model might be a bit of a challenge. As there is not much official support in order to build TWRP for Wear watches as well.

Along with TWRP recovery on your Wear watch, you guys can also take a full android (TWRP) backup of the watch. And flash custom kernels in order to enhance the performance of the watch.

Flash TWRP Recovery Through FastBoot on Wear OS

  • First, you guys have to download a TWRP recovery .img file compatible along with your Wear Watch model and then save it inside a separate folder on your PC.
    └ If you want to find TWRP recovery for your watch check the official directory or do a Google search as well.
  • You have to unlock Bootloader on your Wear OS watch.
  • Turn on Developer options & ADB debugging on Watch as well: 
    • Head to Settings on your Watch.
    • Now scroll down and choose About.
    • Click on it 7 times on Build number in order to enable Developer options.
    • Then swipe left to go back to the Settings screen, and choose Developer options (below About).
    • Click on ADB debugging, and you will get a confirmation in order to turn on ADB debugging. Just click on the right tick.
    • (If your Watch is connected to a PC) then You’ll get a prompt on Watch. That ask for your permission in order to Allow Debugging, scroll down, and select Always allow from this computer option.
  • Just set up ADB and Fastboot on your computer.
  • You need to open a command window inside the folder where you guys saved the TWRP recovery .img file on your computer. In order to do this, just Shift + Right-click on any empty white space inside the folder. And choose the Open command window here from the context menu as well.

Then

  • Now issue the following commands in order to boot your Watch into bootloader mode. (Make sure your Wear Watch is actually connected to PC):
    adb reboot bootloader
  • When in bootloader mode, then just issue the following command. In order to install or flash the TWRP recovery image on your Wear OS watch actually:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

└ Here you just have to modify twrp.img with the name of your TWRP recovery .img file. OR also change your TWRP recovery filename to twrp.img and also use the command above as well.

  • When TWRP is successfully flashed on your device, then just issue the following command in order to reboot your watch into the system:
    fastboot reboot

That’s just all. You can now take full android backups or flash custom zips through TWRP recovery on your Wear OS watch as well.

How can you Boot into TWRP Recovery on Wear OS Watch?

  • Turn on ADB debugging on your Wear watch (refer to Step 3 above).
  • Then you have to setup ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
  • Just connect the watch to the PC through a USB cable or dock.
  • You have to open a command window on PC and issue the following command:
    adb reboot recovery

    └ This will now boot your device into TWRP recovery (if installed) or else it will boot into the stock Android recovery actually.
