How To Add & Edit Gmail Contacts

Do you want to edit Gmail contacts? Gmail is no doubt an amazing or the most popular cloud-based email services all over the world today. This is true for so many reasons. It’s easy to organize or manage your email in Gmail, email threading makes following conversations simple or easy, and filters allow you to handle incoming emails very conveniently.

But rather than this Gmail still good at managing or organizing your contacts. It is not that the Contacts app isn’t essential. It’s just that it’s so difficult to find.

How & Where To Access Your Google Contacts

You’ve checked all the search settings, menus, and still, you can’t find from where to access your Contacts. The interesting thing is that you can access Gmail contacts that are hidden in plain sight.

If you want to access your contacts in Gmail, view at the top of the inbox and to the right. Then choose the six-dot icon (the square grid) located next to your profile photo.

As it brings a list of Google apps, and you have to choose the Contacts icon to open the Contacts app.

After doing this, you’ll then view your whole Google Contacts library.

Contacts can automatically be added when you send emails to anyone or then automatically add them to your contacts list. That is why while creating a new email and begin typing a name into the Cc or To fields, you’ll then view a list of matching names using your contacts list show up.

You can then use the search field located at the top to find particular contacts. Organize or manage email contacts via labels.

Add New Contacts In Gmail

From the Google Contacts app, you can create a new contact simply by choosing a Create contact. You’ll then view a drop-down where you can choose Create a contact to make a single contact. Or choose Create multiple contacts to create more than one contact at the same time.

It’ll launch a new Create new contact window. Just add the details for the contact, including:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Company
  • Job title
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Notes

Most of these fields are mandatory. If you like you can simply input the first name and last name, and an email address or mobile number.

If you try to add more information about the contact, you can then choose the ‘Show more’ option to add a long list of other information. Some information you can add include:

  • Street address
  • Birthday
  • Website
  • Relationship
  • Custom field
  • Much more

Well, any information you like to add about your contacts, you can add in their contact card.

Also, labels are another efficient way to manage or organize all contacts. Just create labels such as Family, Friends, Coworkers, and etc to make it easier to locate your contacts or groups of contacts.

If you want to add a new label just choose the Create label in the Labels section from the left navigation pane. Input the label name and then tap on Save. However, the new label will display up at the bottom of the Label section.

Now tap the label you like to assign it to from the drop-down list

Also, you can create a new label in here by adding its name and choosing the + icon on the right.

How To Remove Google Contacts

Removing contacts is very easy. You can either remove individual or multiple contacts.

To remove an individual contact, choose one of the contacts in the Contacts list to open the card. From the upper right, choose the three dots from the right of the Edit icon.

Now choose Delete from the list to remove the contact.

If you want to remove multiple contacts from your Contacts list, choose the checkbox to the left of each contact you like to delete. You’ll then view a new menu open located at the top of the list when you do this.

Choose the three dots located on the right side of the menu. Then choose the Delete from the drop-down list. This will remove all of the contacts you’ve chosen.

Steps To Import Contacts Into Gmail

If you choose the Import option from the left side, you can then import contacts from a CSV file.

The issue with this is that you want to know how to format that CSV file. The easy to resolve this is to initially export your contacts to a CSV file, then use that CSV file to add the new contacts.

To export:

Step 1:

Choose the Export link from the left navigation panel.

Step 2:

You’ll then view options to export various formats. Select Google CSV.

Step 3:

Once you’ve installed the exported CSV file, head over to the file.

Step 4:

Remove all of the rows (except the header).

Step 5:

Then, use the headers to make your own new contact.

Step 6:

You should create lots of entries as you want by making new rows in this CSV file.

Step 7:

Then save the file and then keep it in CSV format.

Step 8:

Then move back into your Google Contacts app and choose the Import from the left navigation pane.

Step 9:

From the Import contacts window, select the ‘Select file’ option.

Step 10:

Browse to the CSV file you have just created and choose it.

Step 11:

Then choose Import to import those latest contacts into your Google Contacts list.

Steps To Edit Gmail Contacts

Besides adding new contacts, there are a few different, easy methods you can edit your previous contacts.

Step 1:

If you want to do this from right inside Gmail while you’re composing an email, just choose the To label for the to the field.

It’ll open the Google Contacts app so you can choose any contact you like to edit.

How To Edit Individuals Contacts

You can actually avoid the Google Contacts app and directly edit a contact inside the Gmail. All you need to do is to add the contact to the To or Cc field, and then choose the contact icon.

A pop-up a small card appears where you can choose Edit Contact to open the form where you can edit that contact.

It’ll open the window of Edit Contact where you can make any modification you want. Also, it’ll edit contacts from the Google Contacts app. Just choose any of the contacts from the list. A Contact details card open. Choose the pencil Edit Contact icon located at the top of the window.

Also, it opens the same Edit contact window where you can make your edits.
