Well, the Nexus 9 is never going to get Android 8.0 Oreo update officially from Google. However, thanks to our folks over at XDA, an unofficial build of LineageOS 15 is also now available for Nexus 9. And you guys can install it right now to get Android 8.0 Oreo booting on your aging Nexus tablet actually.

LineageOS 15 is also a custom ROM based on AOSP sources of Android 8.0 Oreo. The ROM basically comes along with stock Android UI and a ton of customization options. For example, themes, kernel profiles, and many more advanced features.

Some of the old famous devices that are rocking the Oreo update now thanks to LineageOS 15. That includes the OnePlus 2, Xiaomi Redmi 2, Xiaomi Redmi 3, Xiaomi Mi 3, and also Mi 4, Moto G, Moto G2, Le Max 2, Nexus 4, Nexus 6, HTC One M7, to name some of them.

Because this is the first release of LineageOS 15 for Nexus 9. We wouldn’t recommend you to install it on your Nexus 9 just yet actually. This build of the ROM may have major functionalities missing that are critical for almost each and everyday usage. However, if you just want to give it a try to see Android Oreo in action on your Nexus 9, this ROM is a really good option.

  • Make sure that you guys back up your device completely. Installing the ROM would not actually erase any data on the internal storage. But, it is better to take appropriate precautions actually.
  • Charge your Nexus 9 to at least 50-60% battery level in order to prevent any disruptions during the process.
  • The Nexus 9 must have TWRP installed in order to flash this ROM. You guys can download TWRP for the Nexus 9 from here.

Compatibility and Warning

This ROM is only compatible along with Nexus 9 (codename: flounder/volantis). Just do not try this on any other device.

How to Download Nexus 9 Updates – Android Oreo

Note: You guys need to have TWRP recovery installed on your device for this. In case if you do not have it, just download the TWRP recovery for Nexus 9 from here, and install it as well.

  • You have to download and transfer the LineageOS 15 ROM, Fire-Ice kernel, and Gapps zip files that you downloaded above to your Nexus 9 actually.
  • Now boot your device into TWRP recovery actually.
  • Choose Wipe from TWRP main menu and then do a Swipe to Factory Reset on the bottom of the screen. [Clean install is recommended here, clear everything except internal storage.]
  • You have to back to TWRP main menu, click on Install, and choose the Lineage OS .zip file. That you transferred to your Nexus 9 in Step 1 actually.
  • After you choose the .zip file, just do Swipe to Confirm Flash on the bottom of the screen. In order to begin the custom ROM installation process. This may take some time actually.
  • When your ROM is successfully flashed, you will then see the Wipe cache/dalvik option. Choose it and then do Swipe to wipe on the bottom of the screen.
  • Then just install the Fire-Ice kernel zip and Gapps zip file one-by-one in the same way you installed the LineageOS ROM file.
  • After you flash all the needed files, reboot your device.
