The symptoms

There are many possible error messages that basically indicate an activation issue along with FaceTime or iMessage. However, the most frequent one is the Waiting for activation error that actually appears in the iMessage or FaceTime panels in the Settings app, as the pictured above.

Well, I recently also encountered a slight variation of this issue where not only the “Waiting for activation” message was showing up actually. However, the phone number I was trying to activate with iMessage was also greyed out with a spinning wheel next to it. Well, My case was somewhat unusual since I was trying to activate a secondary phone number on the same iPhone actually. This is not impossible, however, this is definitely not a scenario that most folks will encounter.

Well, other error messages that you could encounter might say:

  • Activation unsuccessful, or
  • An error occurred during activation, or
  • Could not sign in, please check your network connection.

Although the verbiage is different, these are all really much the same issues: you can’t get FaceTime and iMessage to work as well.

  • However, in the Settings app, head to General, and make sure the Date & Time are correct. It is actually the easiest to simply toggle on Set Automatically.

It’s also necessary that you have a carrier that basically supports iMessage. All of the major carriers (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc.) support iMessage actually. If you try all of the methods below and wait 24 hours. However, still is not working, contact your carrier in order to make sure that there are not any limits on your SMS text message plan.
