You are encountering an awful “Unmountable Boot Volume” error when you try to boot your Microsoft Windows 10 computer due to which you can not enter Windows. What is to be done? You can use the following tricks to fix this problem.

Solution 1 – Chkdsk

1) Starting computer by using a Windows 10 DVD or a USB drive. If Windows 10 media is not available then go to this page and follow the steps to generate one using the Media Creation Tool.
2) Choose the “Repair your Computer” option at the lower-left corner, once you start using a DVD or USB drive.
3) Select “Command Prompt”.
4) At the command prompt, type the following then tap “Enter”:
chkdsk /r c:
If the bootable drive is a letter other than “C” then change “c” with the bootable drive letter you use.
5) Select “Y” for yes on the question regarding checking the disk the next time the system restarts.
6) Restart the system. When chkdsk checks the error, you need to be patient. It could take quite a long time.

Unmountable boot volume Solution 2 – Fix Master Boot Record

1) Starting the computer by using Windows 10 DVD or a USB drive. If you don’t have then visit this page and follow the steps to create it.
2) Once you started using a DVD or a USB device, choose the “Repair your computer” option which is at the lower-left corner.
3) Select “Command Prompt”.
4) Type the following at the command prompt and tap “Enter”:
bootrec /fixboot
5) Restart the system. It will take a long time to check your drive for error so be patient.

Unmountable boot volume Solution 3 – Automatic Repair

1) Use Windows 10 DVD or a USB drive when starting your computer. If you don’t have it then visit this page or follow steps to generate one.
2) After starting using a DVD or USB drive, select the “Repair your computer” option located at the lower-left corner.
3) Select “Troubleshoot”>”Advanced options”>”Automatic repair”>”Next”.
4) Select the OS you wish to repair.
5) Wait a bit while utility tries to repair files.


If there is an error in your computer or laptop/notebook then use Reimage Plus which can scan the repositories and substitute corrupt and missing files. Also, if the issue has started due to a system corruption then this would work in such cases.

If these steps do not work then you have a bad hard drive that need to be replaced.
