Here is how you can connect to a remote registry. In case, if you are in a small business environment. Then this will also really an annoying thing that you have to walk out to each computer that you need to fix. Apart from this, if you can remotely connect and then fix problems or adjust settings. This will make things a lot more convenient.

Also, it is very less common, then there are times when you might need to connect to another computer to change. You have to delete or add registry keys and also values. Then you could also have a remote desktop into the computer and then do this. In case, if you are reading this article, then you aren’t going that route.

After reading this article, I am also going to talk about the remote registry service in Windows. This will also allow you to connect directly to the registry hives on another computer using regedit. Although This is available for this to work, then there are several prerequisites.

What Are Remote Registry Requirements?

Are you guys hoping to connect to a remote computer that you don’t have access to, then you are out of luck? You have to use Remote Registry, then you will basically need administrator access to both computers. Then this is basically for convenience and it can’t be used to hack into someone else’s registry.

Now, There are a couple of things that you have to be in place before remote registry will even work:

  • Then the computer you are connecting to has to have a username and password. Now, The password cannot be blank.
  • After that, Both of the computers need to have Remote Administration and then enabled them in the firewall.

  • Now, Both of the computers need to have the Remote Registry service running.

So, The very first requirement is that easy to fulfill. You Just have to go and then add a password to your account. In case, if it does not already have one. Then the second requirement is to fix this by using the command prompt. You have To open an administrator command prompt. Then click on the Start option and then type cmd. Now, right-click on the cmd and then choose Run as Administrator.

You have to copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press Enter.

netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin

So, You will also get a warning message that the command will also execute successfully. Then the netsh firewall command is also deprecated. Now, you will also get this message on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10. This is not a problem as long as it is completed successfully. You have to note that you have to run this command on both machines.

So, this is for the third requirement, you will also need to click on the Start button. Then type in services and then click on just Services with the two gear icons. You have to Scroll down till you see Remote Registry. So, this should not be running by default. Using Windows 10, it will actually be disabled by default. Also, on Windows 7, you can just right-click on it and then choose the Start button. Then On Windows 10, you will also have to right-click and then choose Properties first.

Using the properties dialog, you will also need to change the Startup type. Then there is something other than Disabled. In case, if you need to do this only one time. You have to change it to Manual. Now, you need to access the remote registry often, choose Automatic.

Now, After you select the startup type, you have to click on the Apply button. After that, the Start button will no longer be greyed out. Tap on the Start button and you have to start the remote registry service. So, Again, this will also need to be done on both machines.

Ways To Connect to Hive:

When you have completed all the steps above. Then you can also try to connect to the remote registry. Now, Click on the Start option and then type regedit. You have to open the registry editor. In the next step, you have to click on the File and then click on Connect Network Registry. So, Here you will have to type in the NETBIOS name of the computer that you want to connect to.

You have to note that you can quickly perform a search for all computers on the network. Just by clicking on the Advanced and then clicking on Find Now. In case, if the computer that you are connecting to has a long name. So, you will also need to determine the NETBIOS name for the computer. Then you can do this just by opening a command prompt on that computer and also typing in nbtstat -n.

When you have to type the name in and then click on OK. So, you will be prompted to enter the username and password for an administrator account on the remote computer.

You have to note that if you are connecting to a Windows 10 machine remotely. Then it will also login using your Microsoft account. Also, you will need to type the email address for the username and the password as usual. Now, you should hopefully get connected to the registry on the remote computer. In case, if you get any kind of Access Denied message. This means you must have type this in the credentials wrong.

So, as you can see from above, Then I will connect to a Windows 7 machine just by using the remote registry. It is from my Windows 10 PC. So, You’ll only see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS.
